What Is Knee Pain?
Knee pain is the presence of discomfort in the knee joint, often caused by a dysfunction of the kneecap and/or cartilage, ligaments, and muscle in the area. Like other musculoskeletal dysfunctions, knee pain can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term), and its level of intensity can vary depending on its cause(s).
Knee Pain: Common Accompanying Symptoms
- buckling or locking
- decreased range of motion
- grinding or crunching feeling
- popping noises
Knee Pain Causes
As there are many components of the knee joint, it can often be difficult to identify the cause of knee pain in a given patient. While injuries from active industries (such as sports or physical labor) may be the first to come to mind, knee pain can develop out of less obvious conditions. Some causes behind knee pain include the following.
- knee bursitis
- ruptured ligament
- sports injury
- torn cartilage
Knee Pain Treatment
Always consult your physician before attempting any kind of treatment program.
Pain medication is often prescribed to musculoskeletal discomfort like knee pain, but this approach often addresses only the symptom of knee pain itself and not the underlying cause.
At Central Washington Physical Therapy, we take a causative approach to your healthcare. In addition to providing immediate treatment to help minimize your discomfort, we help to identify probable causes for your condition, how to start improving it now, and how to avoid it in the future. For knee pain, such treatments may include the following:
